Blood Type A Diet & Food List

The 3 Essential Elements of Your Perfect Diet

1. Total Calories
2. Fat:Protein:Carb Ratio
3. Food Sensitivities (Blood Type Diet)

There’s more to diet than just eating right for your blood type, like eating the correct total calories for your metabolic type, and getting your fat:protein:carbohydrate ratio dialed in.

Avoiding your blood type sensitivities alone won’t allow you to look and feel fantastic if you’re not eating enough calories, or if you’re eating too much/too little of one of your macronutrients (fat, protein, carb).

Under-eating calories will make your body create energy on it’s own through cortisol production, which leads to adrenal fatigue. Worse, as cortisol levels become imbalanced, you’re more prone to food sensitivities, and can even have sensitivities to foods on your “beneficial” list that you shouldn’t be sensitive to…

And eating too much/too little fat, protein, or carbohydrate will disrupt your blood sugar levels, also leading to a cortisol imbalance.

The optimal total calories and fat:protein:carb ratio for you depends on your metabolic body type.

body_types

There are 4 major body types: adrenal, ovary, thyroid and liver.

When you know your body type you also know:

  • how many calories you should eat per day
  • how much fat, protein, and carbohydrate you need per day
  • which of your hormones are imbalanced

Once you learn your body type you’ll hold the secrets to unlimited energy, radiant skin, optimal digestion, perfect sleep, and an upbeat mood that lets you float through your day.

Blood Type A Diet & Food List

The Basics

Blood Type As make less stomach acid than the other blood types.  Because stomach acid is required to digest animal meat, these types of foods can be difficult or impossible for Blood Type As to digest properly.  Because an appropriate amount of stomach acid is required to get the entire digestive process started off on the right foot, and Blood Type As usually don’t make enough of it, they tend towards IBS and other bowel-related disorders.

A nutritional supplement that contains stomach acid in the form of hydrochloric acid is a must for most Blood Type As, and it should be taken every time a meal is consumed.

The A Blood Type emerged historically when humans began to settle, turning to farming, rather than hunting, for their sustenance.

History

Blood Type As do best on vegetarian diets.  As an American you may find it difficult to embrace the inheritance of your Blood Type A ancestors.  However, it is important for you to get your food in as close to a natural state as possible: fresh, pure, and organic.

Blood Type As have sensitive immune systems, and are biologically disposed towards heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.  However, as Dr. D’Adamo states in Eat Right For Your Blood Type, “these are your risk factors.  But they need not be your destiny.  If you follow this diet, you can supercharge your immune system and potentially short-circuit the development of life-threatening diseases.”

Weight Loss

Blood Type As ultimately store meat as fat.  If you’re accustomed to eating meat, you’ll lose weight rapidly once beginning the Blood Type A diet as these toxic foods are reduced or eliminated in your diet.  You have probably already noted then when you eat heavier meats like beef, etc. that you feel sluggish afterwards, or that your sinuses are more congested.  Fluid retention, especially in the abdomen, should reduce as heavy meats are eliminated from the diet.

Dairy is also poorly digested by Blood Type As, provoking insulin responses and decreasing metabolic activity

NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

Vitamin B12 – Blood Type As typically have thin stomach lining due to their low stomach acid levels.  The stomach lining produces Intrinsic Factor which helps you absorb vitamin B12.  Any vitamin B12 supplement you take should also contain Intrinsic Factor to help ensure you actually absorb the B12 you’re taking.  It will usually appear on the label as “Stomach parenchyma”.  In our office we typically use Standard Process’ Folic Acid B12.

Vitamin C – Vitamin C is particularly useful at reversing the ill-effects of nitrites found in smoked/cure meats, to which Blood Type As are particularly susceptible.  The best C-rich foods for Blood Type As are berries, grapefruit, pineapple, cherries, lemon, broccoli, and buckwheat.  In our office we use supplements like Cataplex C from Standard Process that contain Buckwheat leaf juice as the primary source of vitamin C.  Buckwheat is highly beneficial for Blood Type As and offers all of the agglutination benefits along with the vitamin C content.

NOTE: Beware of nutritional supplements that use ascorbic acid as their vitamin C source.  You can look at the ingredient label, and next to Vitamin C it will say (as ascorbic acid).  This is not vitamin C, it is just ascorbic acid, and will not give the full benefits of vitamin C.  This will be covered in detail in an upcoming article on our website titled “What’s In Your Multivitamin?” (estimated publish date June 1st, 2012).

Calcium – Calcium requires high stomach acid levels to be digested properly, so Blood Type As are at a disadvantage here.  Blood Type As are also advised to avoid most dairy, which is a main source of calcium for most of the population.  If you’re going to take a calcium supplement then avoid Calcium Carbonate which is a form of calcium that is very difficult for Blood Type As to digest and absorb.  In our office we use Calcium Lactate, which is calcium bound to a lactate salt (no relation to dairy) and is currently known as the most absorbable form of calcium, even higher than calcium citrate.

The best foods for Blood Type As to derive their calcium from are eggs, goat milk, broccoli and spinach.

Iron – Iron is often found most in red meat products which Blood Type As digest poorly.  It can be especially important to supplement for women due to their loss of iron with their menstrual cycles.  Iron requires B12 and vitamin C for proper absorption.  In our office we use Standard Process’ Ferrofood which contains all 3 along the the Stomach Parenchyma discussed under the vitamin B12 section above to ensue absorption of the B12.

The best iron-rich foods for Blood Type As to consume are beans, figs, and blackstrap molasses.
