Chiropractic literally means "with hands". A chiropractor receives extensive training (7.5 years post high-school) in diagnosis and manipulation of the spinal vertebrae. Vertebrae can move slightly out of position, a condition known as a "subluxation".

Once a vertebrae has moved out of position, the muscles that attach to it will tighten up to prevent it from moving even further out of place. Muscle tightness, soreness, and/or spasms can result.

If the subluxation of the vertebrae is severe enough, the nerves of the spinal cord that go to your internal organs can become "pinched", restricting communication between your brain and that organ:

The 1st Chiropractic Treatment

The first official chiropractic treatment was delivered by D.D. Palmer on September 18th, 1895. The first patient, Harvey Lillard, had been deaf for some time, a deafness that began mid-way through his life after being bent over in a stopped position. Upon standing, Mr. Lillard felt a "pop" in his spine, and realized shortly after that his hearing had all but disappeared.

D.D. Palmer, the founder of chiropractic, deduced that a bone in Mr. Lillard's spine had moved out of place, and theorized that restoration of the bone to it's proper position should restore his hearing.

D.D. performed an examination of Mr. Lillard to determine the nature of what we now call a "subluxation". Palmer discovered which bone was misplaced, and the direction of force required to correctly re-position it. He then performed the first chiropractic adjustment in history.

The treatment delivered by D.D. Palmer worked, and Mr. Lillard's hearing was restored, and would remain with him for the rest of his life.

Headaches, Neck Pain, and Low-Back Pain

Dr. Mike performs "Sacro-Occipital Technique" chiropractic. "SOT" is designed to correctly align the pelvis (sacro-) and cranium (occipital). The pelvis and cranium must be properly aligned if you are to experience optimal energy levels, and muscle and nerve function.

SOT is one of the most gentle, non-invasive chiropractic techniques. It includes a variety of "no-force" adjustments, and is especially wonderful during all trimesters of pregnancy.

Most pelvic and cranial misalignments occur during gestation while you are still in the womb. As your body twisted around to find a comfortable position between your mother's internal organs, you began to develop your first subluxations.

Although those subluxations could occur anywhere, they are most common in the pelvis and cranium. Once out of alignment, the pelvis and cranium can cause misalignments elsewhere in the spine:
